Dale L. Madeson

June 10, 1923 — August 29, 2013

Dale Madeson ("Gassy" to his Antigo friends) died on August 29, 2013. He was an original character, born in Belle Plaine, IA on June 10, 1923 to Ollie and Ella Madeson. In high school years, he was a Golden Gloves boxer who went on to the University of Iowa. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II, earning his flight wings as a PBY Catalina Sea Rescue Pilot for both the Army and the Navy. Dale brought his proudest and most poignant service memories to life when describing his flight over the site of the Armistice with the Allied Fleet in Tokyo Bay. We appreciate his service and dedication. When out of the service in 1949, Dale fell in love with Marna Jean Walters. They were married on September 28, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, IA, and were married over 62 years until Marna's death in 2012. Anyone in the family path of Dale knew, without many words, that they were both adored and secure. Also in 1949, Dale and his long-time business partner, Bob Rice, bought the City Gas Company. They are credited with bringing natural gas to Antigo and the surrounding communities since 1960. More importantly, he co-founded a company that has provided for the town, and has extended his family of friends in ways he couldn't have imagined. In earlier days his tracks could be found in the Lions and Elks Clubs. He also played countless rounds at Bass Lake Country Club's golf course. In later years, his time was spent supporting his grandkids, attending hockey and soccer games and enjoying family visits to Colorado. Dale/Gpa/Gassy will be missed and is survived by his oldest son, Rod (Diane) Madeson of Antigo and their children, Megan and Rachel (partner Josh), and his younger son, Rick (Cheryl) Madeson of Colorado, and his children Cory and Jessie. We thank Dale for SO SO many things, but above all, his loyalty to his wife, family, and friends. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 3 at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home with Pastor Debbie Pimm officiating. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday and 9:00-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place at Elmwood Cemetery following the service. Friends may visit online at www.strasserrollerfh.com. A memorial will be established to Langlade County Humane Society. Huge thanks to the Ladies of Evergreen Terrace, who cared for, loved and comforted both of our parents in their last days. You are the best.
