Alice Sperl

July 25, 1925 — March 25, 2021

Alice R. Sperl, age 95, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021 in Verona, under the care of her family and Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on July 25, 1925, the daughter of Cornelius and Martha (Beulke) Keohane. Alice grew up on Clermont Street, and graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1943. She married Henry “Hank” Sperl on April 19, 1952. He preceded her in death in 2000. She was proud of being from Antigo and shared that with those she met while away. Alice was a very determined, hard working and organized person. She worked for 17 years as the Deputy County Clerk of Langlade County, then in the Central Office and later the Junior High Office for the Antigo Unified School District. In retirement she enjoyed working for Kryshak Jewelers, and Brown, Preboski & Brettingen Accountants during the tax season. Alice was an avid bridge player, and treasured the friends she played with. After retiring she also enjoyed cross country skiing and traveling with dear friends. She was known for her delicious cooking, baking and candy making, especially her English toffee. Her granddaughters delighted in decorating cookies and frosting cakes with her. She sewed, knitted for her granddaughters, and tied many quilts for her family and friends. She kept a meticulous home with, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Alice was a member of Faith United Church of Christ, serving on the governing and finance boards. She was also a member of Eastern Star and Shrine. She felt a deep connection with God and expressed that in prayer throughout each day. Alice is survived by her daughter, Margie (Mark) Kryka, of Verona; granddaughters, Mollie (Nora Boneham) Kryka, of Chicago, Keltie Conway, of Verona; beloved great grandchildren, Maddux Conway, Josephine Kryka Boneham; and special nieces and nephews whom she thought so much of. Though she greatly missed her home, neighbors and friends in Antigo she cherished her time with her great grandchildren while in Verona. Along with her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kathleen Kryka; sister, Marguerite Keohane, brother, Francis Keohane and brother, Edward (Maudie) Keohane. Alice’s family will miss her immensely. They would like to express deep gratitude to her loving neighbors who encouraged her to return to her home after a serious stroke in 2007, and then provided the daily support and friendship that enabled her to remain so independent in the home and city she loved, for 11 more years. A memorial service for Alice has now been planned for Thursday, July 22, 2021. The memorial service will take place at Faith United Church of Christ at 3:30 PM. Following the service, burial will take place at Neva Cemetery.
