Charles Henderson, 85, of Waupaca and formerly of Elton, died Mon. Dec. 6, 2010 at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca.He was born Aug. 18, 1925 in Elton, son of the late Robert and Josephine (Fike) Henderson. He married E. Joyce (Roe) Tackett in 1969. She survives and resides in Waupaca.Charles attended Washington School south of Elton. He received his G.E.D. while in the army.He joined the Merchant Marines when he was 17 years old, during World War II. He took his basic training on Coney Island, NY. He sailed on ships from the New York harbor taking supplies to the armed forces in Europe and the South Sea Island. He was in the Merchant Marines for 30 years, taking a break for a 3-year term in the US Army. After his retirement from the Merchant Marines, he worked as head custodian in the Zion, IL schools for 10 years.He attended Four Corners Assembly of God Church in White Lake.Charles liked to hunt and fish. He also liked to oil paint as a hobby. He was a member of the Antigo chapter of the American Legion.In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Charles Daniel (Helen) Henderson of Kenosha, and a brother James (Jenny) Henderson of Marshfield.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Maude Lewis, Mary Laehn, and Irene Coblentz, and a brother, Frank.
