David Gene Kakes, age 63 of Neva, died Saturday May 3 at his home under the care of his family and LeRoyer Hospice. Mr. Kakes was born on January 7, 1951 in Antigo to Eugene and Lois (Neururer) Kakes. On June 28, 1980 he was united in marriage to Jeanne Krugel at Peace Lutheran Church. Mr. Kakes attended schools for the deaf in Wausau and Milwaukee and returned to Antigo graduating from Antigo High School in 1971. Along with his family, Mr. Kakes was a potato grower, owning and operating Kakes Farms, now a division of Sowinski Farms. He liked the outdoors, hunting and making firewood. He also enjoyed cruise trips with his wife and family. Above all he cherished his family and grandchildren greatly. In addition to his wife, Jeanne, he is survived by his parents, Eugene and Lois Kakes of Neva; a son Matthew of Neva; a daughter Megan (Justin) Michels of Aniwa; 2 grandchildren Dane and Emma Michels; 2 sisters, Darcy (David) Blakemore of Ogden, UT and Debbie (Frank ) Stainbrook of Antigo; 1 brother Dan (Vicki) Kakes of Neva; and his godchildren, Aaron, Kaitlyn and Joseph. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home and on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the service at the Church. A memorial will be established in Mr. Kakes' name.
