Donald C. Diercks

Donald C. Diercks, age 84, passed away peacefully today in Antigo.Don was born February 7, 1926 in Antigo to the late Ben and Margaret (McMillen) Diercks. He was a graduate of Antigo High School class of 1944. Don served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII from January of 1944 until June of 1946 serving in Guam in the 20th AF 315th bomb wing as sergeant. After his service in Guam, Don attended the University of Wisconsin from September of 1946 until May of 1947. He then enlisted in the US Air Force in October of 1953 until December of 1960, serving in the Korean War as Staff Sergeant. Don also farmed here in Langlade County with his family and worked at the Kraft Cheese Company. He worked for the Salvation Army for 35 years as chaplain and was Corps Sergeant Major in St. Louis for 17 years. He returned to Boise to be near his children and grandchildren until 1999. Many special moments were shared during that time. Don then returned to Antigo, as that was always home to him. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Don is survived by 2 daughters; Terry (Brent) Wardle of Nampa, Idaho and Kerry (Katy) (Jon) Vanderhoef of Eagle, Idaho and a son Benjamin H. Diercks II of Houston, TX ; a brother Bill Diercks of Plover, WI; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers; Robert and Jack Diercks and a sister Marge Gamble and a great grandchild Scotty. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday June 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Louise Sanford will officiate. Military honors will be held at the graveside service. The family would like to express a very sincere appreciation to Dr. Flowers, Kay, Carol, Charlie and Tom from Parkview Manor and to brother-in-law Bill Gamble for all of their support over the past few months.
