Donald Joseph Schmidt, lifelong resident of the Phlox area, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Langlade Hospital. He was 85 years old. He was born Aug. 4, 1928 in Phlox, son of the late George and Anna (DeBroux) Schmidt. He married Gladys Cornelius on Aug. 4, 1949 at St. John Catholic Church in Antigo, and she preceded him in death in 1994. He worked as a woodsman and operated a hobby farm. He also was employed at Vulcan Corporation. He enjoyed playing on church softball teams, and was a volunteer for LeRoyer Hospice. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. An instrumental member of the church, he served on the cemetery committee, was a member of the Holy Name Society, organized the church picnic, and was an early supporter of getting the new church built. Survivors include 5 daughters, Donna (Robert) Weed of Aniwa, Patricia (Earl) Sippl of Aniwa, Karen (Joe) Meisenhelder of Aniwa, Mary (Tim) McMann of Menasha, and Jean Schmidt of Phlox; 2 sons, John (Terri) Schmidt of Weston, and Steven (Lillian) Schmidt of Green Bay; 7 sisters-in-law, Cloma Schmidt, Nadine Schmidt, Marilyn Frisch, Germaine Orlowski, Nancy Jolitz, Ann Cornelius, and Stella Cornelius; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Gladys, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; grandson, Joey Koeppel; a sister, Margaret King; and 6 brothers, Victor, Clem, Norb, Francis, Robert, and Cyril. A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Fr. Jeremiah Worman officiating. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home, with a 7:00 p.m. wake service officiated by Deacon Tom Hartman. A second visitation will take place from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will follow the service in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
