Dorothy Tyra, formerly of Pickerel died March 24, 2014 in Belvidere, IL. Mrs. Tyra was born on October 3, 1926 to the late Dr. and Mrs. M.E. Bellows in Oak Park, IL. She graduated from Oak Park River Forest Township High School in 1944. She attended Northwerstern University and went on to graduate from the West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing in Oak Park, IL. She studied classical music for nine years and performed in many piano concerts in Oak Park and Chicago. In 1949 she moved to Pickerel with her parents. On November 30, 1951, she married Warde Tyra in Rhinelander. Mr. Tyra preceded her in death on August 13, 1998. Mrs. Tyra worked as a registered nurse, working for Dr. Burton S. Rethert, M.D. and Dr. Dale V. Moffet, M.D. at the Crandon Emergency and Maternity Hospital for 30 years. She also worked for the Forest County Public Health Department and for her father in his practice. Mrs. Tyra was active in environmental groups, including Wisconsin Resources Protection Council- Town of Nashville Chapter, serving as their secretary-treasurer. She was also a member of the Wolf River Watershed Alliance and the Wolf River Watershed Educational Project. Mrs. Tyra was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Pickerel. She was active in her faith. She had been a Sunday school teacher, piano accompanist and choir member while residing in Illinois. In addition to her parents and husband a brother Lester preceded Mrs. Tyra in death. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pickerel. Reverend Michael Mathey will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the service at the church. Strasser-Roller Funeral Home is entrusted with her services.
