Earl Smith

Earl Smith of Antigo, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Friendly Village Nursing Home in Rhinelander, surrounded by family. He was 79 years old.


Earl was born on December 5, 1943 on the family farm in Kent to the late Earl and Bertha (Lewis) Smith. He was raised on the dairy farm and later moved to Antigo with his family.


On August 21, 1965, he was united in marriage to Bobette "Bobbie" Schutts at United Methodist Church in Antigo. She preceded him in death on May 14, 2020.


Earl attended Antigo High School. He worked at the Frost Veneer Mill before becoming a self-employed paint contractor. He worked as a paint contractor for over 50 years and passed his craftmanship down to his son, Randy.


Earl was a member of United methodist Church in Antigo where he also served as a caretaker. He also did maintenance for the Antigo Housing Authority for many years.


He was a kind, hardworking, generous man who would lend a hand when needed. He loved spoiling his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to know Earl.


Earl is survived by children; Tina (Jeff) Hubatch of Antigo and Randy (Hayley) Smith of Antigo, grandchildren; Eric (Nicki) Hubatch of Houston, TX, Ashley (Justin) Grones of Antigo, and Ethan (Abbie) Schroeder of Mosinee, great grandchildren; Sadie and Ian Grones, Harper and Jack Hubatch, and Beau Schroeder, siblings; Tom (Judy) Smith of Neshkoro, Margie Kuehnl of Appleton, and Kathy (Al) Ament of Menasha, brother-in-law; Pete Engel of Merrill, sister-in-law; Judi Smith of Sussex, and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to his wife and parents, Earl was preceded in death by brother Gary Smith, sister Carol Maxine Engel, nephew Mike Smith, and great granddaughter Adeline Schroeder.


A celebration of Earl's life will be planned at a later date.
