Garrett Jess Walters, age 68, of Wausau died Monday, June 5, 2023 at his home after courageously living with ALS. His faith in the Lord sustained him throughout his illness.

Garrett was born on November 14, 1954 to the late Lavern “Sonny” and Beverly (Yanke) Walters in Antigo.

Garrett was a graduate of White Lake High School class of 1972. He then served in the US Army.

Over the years, Garrett managed gas stations, including the one on the hill in White Lake and owned and managed health clubs. He also worked for the City of Weston as a heavy equipment operator and most recently was a school bus driver for Lamers.

Garrett was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Weston.

He loved mowing his lawns, feeding birds and squirrels, the outdoors, working, the outdoors and his fish and aquarium.

Garrett was also a car enthusiast and with pride he kept his brother Glenn’s 1968 Plymouth 440 since his death in December of 1971.

Garrett was passionate about keeping traditions and family gatherings alive. He was the orchestrator of the annual family Fourth of July celebrations held at the family home in White Lake each year. Christmas was also a treasured holiday to gather with family.

Survivors include his siblings: Gay Ann (Danny) Trepanier of Winthrop Harbor, Il, Gregg (Gail Geiger) Walters of Antigo, Glenda (Bill) Cunningham of Antigo, his adventure partner and longtime love Janet Reid, Nephews: Alan and Kevin Hutchins, Justin Cunningham, and great nephews: Miles and Ian Hutchins.

A memorial will be established in Garrett’s name.
