Helen A. Peters, of Antigo, died Sat., July 9, 2011 at Evergreen Terrace. She was 98 years old. She was born May 19, 1913 in Antigo, daughter of the late Matt and Alice (Smolk) Taylor. She married Marlowe H. Peters on May 25, 1935 in Belvedere, IL. He preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 1997 after 62 years of marriage. She graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1930. Mrs. Peters and her family resided in Clintonville and Pelican Lake for 20 years prior to returning to Antigo. Mrs. Peters was part of an important family in Langlade County history. One Grandfather was the brother of Squire A. Taylor, the founder of Langlade County. Her other Grandfather was James K. Smolk, an early Antigo barber for many years and a painter whose art work can be found through out the local area. Mrs. Peters was a member of Faith United Church of Christ and belonged to the Women of Faith group. She was also a Past Matron of the Clintonville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a 50-year member of the organization. She was also a member of the Langlade County Historical Society. Her hobbies included traveling, reading, sewing, antiques, and quilting. Survivors include a daughter, Julie Peters of Madison; a son, James (Jollene) Peters of Elbert, CO; 4 grandchildren, Jon Peters of Appleton, Jodi (Pat) Maley of Austin, TX, Jefferson (Kim) Peters of Colorado Springs, CO, Jayme (Kurt) Kuntzelman of Colorado Springs, CO; 6 great-grandchildren, Hanna and J.P. Maley, Dakota Peters, McKenzie Peters, and Henry and Mattie Kuntzelman; 3 nieces, Jelaine Brah of Mukwonago, Marlene Ashenbrenner of Muskego , and Donna Lyons of West Allis; a nephew, David Celmer of Adams; a sister-in-law, Lola Taylor of West Allis; and good friend Audrey Nohel of Madison. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Maurine Celmer, and two brothers, Eugene and Robert Taylor. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Faith United Church of Christ, with Rev. Ann Wahlers officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thurs. at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home, with Order of the Eastern Star service scheduled for 6:30 p.m. A second visitation will take place from 10-11 a.m. Fri. at church. Burial will take place at a later date at the Enterprise Cemetery, Pelican Lake. Memorials in Helen's name may be directed to Faith United Church of Christ, 628 Clermont St., Antigo, WI 54409. We wish to thank all of the very kind and caring personnel at Evergreen Terrace and the many friends, ages 1-100, who thought enough to visit our Mother when possible and phoned her so often. She loved them all and the County of Langlade.
