Helen Maxine Umland

Helen Maxine Umland of Antigo passed away on November 7, 2025 surrounded by her family and under the care of LeRoyer Hospice and Care Partners. She was 96 years old.

Helen was born on October 18, 1929 in Antigo to the late Charles and Elizabeth “Bessie” (Knox) Keen. She graduated from Antigo High School, class of 1947. She was united in marriage to Donald Umland on January 31, 1950 at Sanborn Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on October 5, 1989. In addition to being a homemaker, Helen worked at Woolworth’s Dime Store and as an artist for Margaret Studios. Most recently she worked as a childcare provider.

Helen enjoyed knitting and flower and vegetable gardening. She was a talented artist in her younger years. She treasured time spent with her family and she loved children.

Helen is survived by daughters; Ruth (James) Homan of Antigo, Donnell (John) Bonnell of Antigo, and Christy (Paul) Mathis of Rib Mountain, son; Jay (Mary) Umland of Antigo, grandchildren; Ryan, Jenny, Jeff, Scott, Levi, Sierra, Lauren, Carrie, Chuck, Tomiena, Amber, Josh, Cordell, Cole, Conner, Alexa, and Olivia, great grandchildren; Emma, Cooper, Irina, Oliver, Leo, Eliza, Lucy, and Madeline.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by a daughter Gail Rusch, sisters; Betty (Edwin) Hanselman, June (Earl) Kneiszel, and Janet Bunda, brothers; Wilbur (Christine) Keen, and Tom Keen.

A private burial for Helen was held at Elmwood Cemetery for her immediate family.
