Janis Marie Gilbert, 82 of Antigo, died Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Aspirus Langlade Hospital. Janis was born on June 25, 1937 in Door County to the late Orville and Norma (Dewitt) Simonar. She was raised in Manitowoc and graduated from Manitowoc High School. On June 30, 1956, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Anton Gilbert. The couple moved to Antigo in 1967. Lee, having been proficiently experienced in the grocery business, along with Jan opened Lee's Super Valu in 1976 here in Antigo. The store continues today as Gilbert's Sentry under the ownership of son, "Butch" and his wife Tammy. Upon retirement, Janis and Lee became residents of Lake Whales, Florida. While residents there, Janis was a member of the La Jolly Dames, a group that celebrated Mardi Gras making floats and costumes and creating some fun memories. Lee was a member of the counterpart group, Crew of Rex. Janis was a member of St. John Catholic Church. Janis enjoyed golfing, fishing, especially fishing trips to Canada. She also enjoyed playing cards and traveling. Most dear to her was family. Survivors in addition to Lee, include 4 daughters; Lori (Dave Wolff) Boers of Manitowoc, Lisa Gilbert of Appleton, Linnea (Lyndon) Swartzendruber of Antigo, Lucinda Gilbert (Tony Monsma) of Antigo, a son; LeRoy, Jr. "Butch" (Tammy) Gilbert of Antigo, 15 grandchildren; Jeff, Eric, Brent, Jenna, Jessica, Craig, Lance, Casey, Alyssa, Kayla, Kyle, Malichi, Anthony, Dylan, Tanner, 22 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Joann (Bill) Hecker and Lynn Herman both of Manitowoc and a brother-in-law Edward (Marion) Gilbert of Antigo. In addition to her parents, Janis was preceded in death by 2 infant sons; John and Lance, a sister; Sally Hablewitz, a sister-in-law; Carol Mae Klabunda , and 2 brothers-in-law; Gerald Gilbert and Bud Herman, and her mother-in-law and father-in-law; Edward Sr. and Laura Gilbert. A memorial mass will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. John Catholic Church. Father Matthew Simonar will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM in Hoffmann Hall at St. John Catholic Church. Memorials in Janis's name may be directed to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
