John "Jack" Crawford

April 18, 1932 — September 29, 2013

John T. (Jack) Crawford, former long time Antigo resident, died at home surrounded by his family. He fought a long battle with cancer and Alzheimer's and never lost his sense of humour or kind nature. He was born April 18th, 1932 in Antigo, the son of Earl A Crawford and Hortense Thurber Crawford, they preceded him in death. He attended Antigo High School. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S Army and served at Fort Carson. CO. and Fort Riley, KS. Following a medical discharge he returned home to Antigo to marry his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth A. Kluck (Betty) Crawford. She survives. Jack worked for Margaret's Studios, Montgomery Ward, Frank's Cab Co., Glowan's Department Store, Wagner Oil, Wagner Ambulance Service, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Mercury Boat and Motor Sales, Felix Zeloski Farms, Copps Food Center, Master Gas/City Gas Answering Service and was a Langlade County Sheriffs Deputy. He ran Jack's Service Station on 5th Avenue, was the Owner/Operator of Crawford Ambulance Service and served the people of Langlade County as Coroner for over 30 years. He earned his GED and National Registry as an Emergency Medical Technician from North Central Technical College. He volunteered his time to assist in training hundreds of First Responders, EMT's and Fire Fighters. Along with his wife, he ran the band parents association at the Antigo High School for many years and was an avid supporter of students in the arts. He started the Rural Fire Control and served as the Chief for several years. He was personally invested in community issues having an impact on the care and well being of its people. He worked closely with the Wisconsin Organ Donation team, to help families choose to give the gift of life to others. Quietly and extensively he gave of himself, never looking for recognition or thanks. His love for his family and his passion to help others consumed his life. He will be remembered as the greatest father and grandfather by his 3 children, Peter (Wendy) Crawford of Waukesha, WI, Cheryl (Bill Jeffries) Crawford of Zionsville, IN, and Sue (Dennis) Doucette of Burnsville, MN., and 6 grandsons, Nicholas Doucette of Chicago, IL., Korbyn Doucette (Jenna Thorson) of Shakopee, MN., Austin Lewis of Cincinnati, OH., John Crawford of Urbana, IL., Erik Doucette of Minneapolis, MN., and Paul Jeffries of Zionsville, IN. He loved us unconditionally and sacrificed anything for us and our futures. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Noreen (Ray) Knolinski, Margaret (Ralph) Schmidt and Loretta (Robert Sr) McGregor, and 5 brothers, Thomas, Earl (Marge), Robert, Leonard (Pearl) and Roy Crawford. Very special thanks to the amazing Fairview Hospice and Mobile Care teams who provided care support to his wife Betty, daughter Sue and son-in-law Dennis. At his request, no visitation or funeral services will be held at this time. Memorial service plans are pending with Strasser-Roller Funeral Home, Antigo. He has donated his body to Forensic Science at the University of Minnesota and to Alzheimer's research in his final planned act to help others.
