Julius Peter Michels, age 90, of Antigo, died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Eastview Medical and Rehabilitation Center. Julius was born October 24, 1923 in Antigo to the late Peter Matthew and Eva (Schuman) Michels. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Bruening on October 8, 1949 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Polar. Julius worked on the Michels' family dairy farm in Polar. He then began driving for FS Cooperative. Julius also owned and operated a go cart track on Antigo's north side. He later started his own lime and fertilizer business, Michels' Agricultural Service. His knowledge of farm service and mechanics led him to owning and operating Farmers Elevator and M & R Service Garage. Julius was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Polar where he served on the Board of Elders, the St. Peter's Church Council and was a member of its Men's Club. He had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trips to Canada, and time at the family's cottage on Post Lake, where he was known to cook for the family over the open fire. He and Lorraine were baseball fans and enjoyed watching games together. Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Cheryl Meyer of Wausau, 6 sons, Ron, Dennis, and Jerome all of Antigo, Ken of Ringle, Keith of Bryant, Kevin (Michelle) of Wausau, 12 grandchildren, Brent (Trina) Meyer, Melissa Meyer, Corey (significant other, Ashley) Meyer, Benjamin (Sara) Michels, Jonathon Michels, Jacob Michels, Amanda (Lenny) Miglieri, Brandon (Sheila) Michels, Justin (Megan) Michels, Abigail Michels, Cody Golberg, Miranda Golberg, 8 great grandchildren, Logan, Alisen, Marcus, RyAnn, Kylee, Aybree, Dane and Emma, 2 sisters, Ruth Walters of Appleton and Rosemary (Glenn) Kegley of Antigo. Julius was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, a sister Delores Knorr, a daughter-in-law, Cathy Michels, a brother-in-law, James Walters, and a sister-in-law, Fern Mathison. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Polar. Reverend Donald Engebretson and Reverend Donald Sprengler will officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, January 3 from 4:00 – 8:00PM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home and on Saturday from 10:00AM until the service at the church. Interment will be in St. Peter's Church Cemetery. A memorial will be established in his name.
