LaVerne N. Helbling, 84, of Antigo died Wednesday at Asprius Wausau Hospital. LaVerne was born October 31, 1925 in Milwaukee to the late Claude and Evelyn (Adler) Nelson. She married Ernest Dabel. He preceded her in death. She later married Rollin Helbling and he also preceded her in death. LaVerne was a driver's license examiner in Milwaukee, and was the first of 2 women at the time, to hold the position in Wisconsin. Following her retirement LaVerne moved to Post Lake and then later to Antigo. LaVerne was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and a 50 year member of the VFW Auxiliary.She enjoyed crocheting and gifting her pieces. She was also part of the ladies quilting circle of Calvary Lutheran Church. LaVerne worked along with her family at The Old Hen House, where she created beautiful glass mosaic pieces. Survivors include a daughter; Cynthia Dabel of Antigo; 2 brothers; Richard (Joan) Nelson of Mercer, PA and Ronald (Ellie) Nelson of Lavonia, MI; very special friends; Carl Simon of Antigo, Penny Kettlewell of Antigo, and Joan Schuster of Antigo, a stepson; Tim Helbling of Lathrop,CA, and 2 stepdaughters; Candace Karau of Milwaukee and Lani Bartelt of Milwaukee. An infant son; Steven Eric and a brother Robert Nelson preceded LaVerne in death."You were a wonderful mother and my best friend. I will miss you." Love-Cindy
