Laverne "Vern" Yonkee

LaVerne “Vern” Yonkee passed away on October 17, 2021 under the care of the staff at The Bay at Garden View and Le Royer Hospice. Vern was 77 years old. Verne was born on March 8, 1944 in Antigo to the late Theodore and Alma (Domke) Yonkee. He was a graduate of Antigo High School, class of 1962. He served in the United States Army. While serving in the Army, he was stationed in Baumholder, Germany. On July 19, 1969, he was united in marriage to Billie Sue Sparks at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Deerbrook. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2010. Vern worked in farming and at South Side Tire before retiring as a milk truck driver. Verne attended Liberty Baptist Church in Antigo. He was also very active in the American Legion and served as a commander. He volunteered for the Town of Peck Fire Department for over 40 years. In 2016, Vern took the Honor Flight. Those who knew Vern knew that he was always available to help a neighbor in need. He had a great love for his feline companions. Vern is survived by his daughter, Melody (Jim) Hohensee of Antigo and sister; Arleen Guenthner of Laurel, MT. In addition to his parents and wife, Vern was preceded in death by his siblings; Dorothy Kempinski, Bernice Yonkee, Delberte Yonkee, Elaine Yonkee, and Raymond Yonkee. A private graveside service will be scheduled for a later date with military honors being performed at the cemetery.
