Marjorie Bussert, a centenarian, passed away at Anna’s House in New Franken, WI on August 4, 2021. Marjorie was born April 11, 1921 in Langlade County to Donald Dean and Selma Otelia (Olsen) Fish. Marjorie was a graduate of Elcho High School. She also attended Langlade County Normal School and began her teaching career at the age of 19 in the one room Sunset School. During World War II she joined the Coast Guard. Following her service, she returned to Elcho and continued teaching. She taught at Mole Lake, Pelican Lake, Summit Lake and Elcho. Not only did she have a long career in education, she also was a homemaker, known for her excellent pies, and raising six children. She was united in marriage to Edwin Shulze in 1946 at the Elcho Congregational Church. Edwin preceded her in death in March of 1985. She met Billie Bussert in the church choir and they married in 1992. They enjoyed 26 years together. He preceded her in death in September of 2018. Survivors include her six children: John (Lien) Shulze of Las Vegas, NV, Dean Shulze of Escondido, CA, Vern (Elizabeth) Shulze of Louisville, CO, Dorothy Summers of Green Bay, WI, Beverly (Mike) Stearney of Hudson, WI, Donna (Frank) Straka of Algoma, WI, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a brother Rodney (Nilah) Visser of Elcho, WI. In addition to her parents and husbands, Marjorie was preceded in death by brothers: Carl Visser and Edward Fish and sisters; Dorothy Rasmussen and Ruth Litterst. Marjorie loved walking in the woods, family, music and art. She also loved puzzles, especially crossword puzzles. She was a generous and kind person, volunteering, and involved in her community of which she was a lifelong resident. She enjoyed travel and hobbies in her retirement. Her life spanned many momentous changes, (through 18 presidents, The Great Depression, the New Deal, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Civil Rights, Watergate, Political Assassinations, and the collapse of the Berlin Wall.) She witnessed devastating epidemics of Polio, TB and COVID. She saw amazing inventions and innovations, from flush toilets, global transportation, television, cell phones, computers, and Internet. Through it all she was fearless and optimistic. A memorial service will be held on August 14, 2021 at 11:00 AM at United Church of Christ in Elcho. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 AM until the service. Visitors in attendance are encouraged to wear a mask indoors. Interment will be in the Elcho Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider donating in her honor to the Elcho UCC Women’s Fellowship or the Elcho United Church of Christ where she was a lifelong member.
