Maxine Ann MacDonald “Auntie Mac” passed away on January 30, 2024 at the age of 93. She was under the care of family, LeRoyer Hospice, and the staff of Evergreen Terrace.
Auntie Mac was born on November 16, 1930 in Antigo to the late James and Opal (McNinch) MacDonald. She graduated from Antigo High School, class of 1948. She went on to graduate from University of Wisconsin LaCrosse with a degree in teaching on June 1, 1952 and later received a Master’s Degree in English and Physical Education from UW Oshkosh on January 19, 1968. She first taught in Gladstone, MI and then had a 30-year teaching career in Oshkosh at Webster Stanley Middle School. There, she was a physical education teacher, guidance counselor, and assistant principal. She retired in 1987 to Las Vegas.
Auntie Mac was a member of Ss. Mary and Hyacinth Catholic Church. She was actively involved, assisting with funeral dinners and lectoring at St. Wencel’s Catholic Church. She was also involved at her church during her time in Las Vegas, sometimes lectoring for 6 masses a weekend.
Auntie Mac was always known for staying active and busy. Her hobbies were golfing, gardening, reading, watching movies, walking and caring for her lawn. She also enjoyed golf, softball, tennis, basketball, music, and dance. She was talented at knitting and sewing and would knit for family and elementary students. She traveled all over the U.S. before settling back in Antigo in 2012.
Auntie Mac is survived by brothers James (Lois) MacDonald of Antigo and George MacDonald of Antigo, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Auntie Mac was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law Betty and Douglas Holmberg, sister-in-law Judy MacDonald, nephews Charles Holmberg and Michael MacDonald, great nephew Kyle Lucht, and great great niece Loretta Below.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Auntie Mac will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Ss. Mary and Hyacinth Catholic Church with Father Joel Sember officiating. Visitations will take place on Monday February 5, 2024 at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a wake service at 6:30 PM with Father Charles Hoffmann. Visitation will also be held Tuesday morning at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home from 9:30-10:45 AM. Burial will follow the service at Bent Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mac’s name can be directed to Ss. Mary and Hyacinth’s and All Saints Catholic School. Mac’s family would like to extend a special thank you to LeRoyer Hospice and the Staff of Evergreen Terrace.
