Margaret Marie "Peg" Schmidt, 83, of Antigo passed away Monday, August 17, 2009, in her home. Born July 18, 1926, in Antigo, daughter of the late Earl A. and Hortense Beatrice (Thurber) Crawford. On December 17, 1947, she married Ralph Rudolph Schmidt in Antigo. They lived in the Antigo area, moving to Milledgeville where they resided for 23 years, before moving back and retiring in Antigo. Peg worked as a dental assistant in Wisconsin and Illinois for many years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Antigo, and Trinity Lutheran Church, Milledgeville, where she was a church soloist starting at a young age. Peg was a former Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was the only child from her family to graduate from high school, Antigo High School class of 1944. Peg was an excellent seamstress, making quilts for each grandchild as high school graduation gifts. She also crocheted an afghan for Christmas for each of her grandchildren. Baking bread and kolaches were a specialty. Time spent at the cottage on Lake Metonga was always looked forward to and enjoyed with her family. Survivors include husband, Ralph, daughters, Gail (Ray) Perkins, Edgerton WI, Judy (Kevin) Van Zuiden, South Beloit, IL, sons, Gary (Cindy) Schmidt, Two Rivers, WI, and Joel Schmidt of Fremont, CA. Further survived by grandchildren, Naomi (Jason) Vreeland, Kami (Ed) Ebens, Jamie Perkins, Christine Schmidt, Timothy (Katie) Schmidt, Andrew (Alyssa) Schmidt, Elizabeth Schmidt and Rebecca Van Zuiden and great-grandchildren, Conner Schmidt, Ana Peduk, Lindsay Pelaez-Schmidt and Audrey Vreeland. A sister, Noreen Knolinski, Stevens Point, WI, and brothers, Earl Crawford Jr., Brookfield, WI, and Jack (Betty) Crawford, Hudson, WI.Her parents and a granddaughter, Rachel Van Zuiden, a sister and four brothers predeceased her.Funeral services will be Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home. The Reverend Kate Kraft will officiate. Visitation is Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. on Friday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
