Richard Allgaier

Richard John Allgaier, age 81, of Antigo died Sunday at his home under the care of his family and Aspirus Comfort Care Hospice. Although enduring a lengthy illness he retained his sense of humor and was blessed to be at his home surrounded by family. Mr. Allgaier was born on November 8, 1931 in Brookefield, IL to the late John and Eleanor (Bettin) Allgaier. He was a graduate of Lyons Township High School class of 1950. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Navy as a Seabee in February of 1951 serving in the US Naval Mobile Construction Battallion until 1952. He was involved in operations performed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Allgaier began an apprenticeship as a journeyman carpenter. He continued in construction building homes. He built all of the family's homes and went on to build his daughter's homes also. On April 24, 1954 he was united in marriage to Ann Gruthoff. The couple resided in Illinois for many years, raising their family. In 1975, they moved to Antigo. Mr. Allgaier was a member of Faith United Church of Christ and the ELKS Club. He delighted in his grandchildren, enjoyed watching wildlife and birds in his backyard, was a skilled woodworker, having made cradles and rocking chairs for his grandchildren as well as many other lathed woodcrafts. He grew a vegetable garden and enjoyed trout fishing in his pond. He was also a collector of marbles and spheres made of gemstones. His dog, Juilius, was a beloved companion for him. In addition to his wife, Ann, Mr. Allgaier is survived by 2 daughters, Beth (Keith) Lindner of Antigo and Barbara (Bill) Krause of Wausau, a son, David (Joan) Allgaier of Antigo, 2 sisters, Joan (Donald) Arazmus of Springfield, IL and Doris (Frank) Johnson also of Springfield, IL, 2 brothers, Donald (Flora) Lisle of IL, and James of Cassville, MO, 10 grandchildren, Amy Bolen, Ali and Kim Lindner, Daniel and Tony Kegler, Katy (Aaron) Boehm, Cassandra Bierman, Benjamen (Jenny) Bierman, Jamie (Andy) McIntyre, and Michelle Krause, 14 great grandchildren, Conner, Jacob, Bella, Divine, Serene, Davion, Contessa, Neela, Aubrey, Olivia, Natalie, Jaymin, Amelia, and Charlotte. A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 10 at 11:30 a.m. at Faith United Church of Christ. Reverend Wes Jedras will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the church. A memorial will be established in Mr. Allgaier's name. Strasser-Roller Funeral Home is serving the family.
