Richard H. Hurlbert

Richard “Dick” Harlan Hurlbert, age 83, died Thursday at his home under the care of his family and LeRoyer Hospice. Dick was born on January 13, 1938 in Antigo to the late Gilbert and Adeline (Novak) Hurlbert. He was a graduate of Antigo High School class of 1956. Dick served in the US Airforce from 1955 until 1963. He was member of VFW Leland-Tollefson Post 2653. On August 3, 1985 Dick was united in marriage to Penelope “Penny” Rudell at Faith United Church of Christ. Penny survives and resides in Antigo. He was previously married to Jeannie Reed, the mother of his 3 children. Dick’s professional life was abundant. He worked in broadcasting for WJFW in Rhinelander, WRLO/WATK radio, and was district manager of what is now Spectrum for 20 years. He sold cars for Vern’s auto and taught at TransAmerican School of Broadcasting. He also served the community as a member of Langlade County Board for 20 years, resigning from his position only weeks ago. After his retirement, Dick was drawn back to radio, hosting Real Country on WATK every Friday night for many years. A lifelong Antigo resident, Dick’s commitment to the community ran deep. He was a member of various service clubs, including Antigo Jaycees, Benevolent Order of ELKS, and he served as secretary of the Antigo Langlade Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of Triple R Riding Club, coached Little League Baseball and was a member of the SnoDrifter Snowmobile Club. Dick enjoyed golf, horseshoes, gardening, and most of all his friends and his family. Survivors in addition to his wife, Penny, include children; Richard “Rick” (Cindy) Hurlbert of Post Lake, Rachelle (Chuck) Arndt of Antigo, and Robert (Heather) Hurlbert of Antigo, grandchildren; Richard (Kimberly) Hurlbert of Antigo, Richard Brad (Dayna) Bina of Chicago, Brittany (Derek) Lang of Kansas, Jedidiah Arndt (fiancé Jessica) of Antigo, Christopher (Anna) Cahak of Minnesota, Lyndsay Yandila (fiancé Zach) of Green Bay, 17 great grandchildren, a brother; Brian (Jan) of Georgia, his aunt; Arlene Novak Simon of Watertown, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Ranae Hurlbert, and brothers Lew and Daniel Hurlbert. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home. Reverend Marvin Kindle will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home and again on Tuesday at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 AM. Local veterans will stand honor guard beginning at 6:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. The committal service will be held in the summer with military honors at Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial will be established in Dick’s name.
