Richard T. Winter

August 21, 1934 — October 12, 2014

Richard T. Winter passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family, after a spirited battle with cancer. He was 80 years old. Mr. Winter was born on August 21, 1934 in Antigo to the late Gustav and Gertrude (Tesch). He was honored to have graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1952, where he met his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Norma Stasek. While in high school, he was a member of the basketball, football, and golf teams, and forged enduring friendships with classmates and teammates that would span his entire life. After high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a member of the U.W Badger basketball team during the 1953-54 season. He interrupted his undergraduate studies to serve with the United States Army for three years and was stationed in Berlin, Germany. While in Berlin, he played for the U.S. Army team, the Berlin Bears, and more than once told the story of how he "hit for 20" against the German Olympic team. After service he returned to U.W. Madison where he completed his undergraduate degree, and following, his law degree in 1962. Mr. Winter then returned to Antigo and joined his father Gustav in law practice. They both practiced for over 50 years. He considered his practice an avocation, and cherished the relationships he established with folks from all walks of life. His son Michael joined the practice in 1997. Family was very important to Dick and after he and Norma married on Sept. 14, 1957, they had four children, Karen (Michael) Cherry, Tinley Park, IL; Jeffrey, Bass Lake, David (Kari), Beloit, and Michael (Maureen) of Antigo. He is survived by four grandchildren, Danielle (Jeffrey) Fryer, of Naples, FL, Morgan Winter of Janesville, and Matthew and Maggie Winter, Antigo. A great grandchild is expected in January, 2015. Further survivors include his younger brother, Donald (Nancy) of Eau Claire, brothers-in-law, Kenneth Henry and Jerome (Linda) Pitts, and sisters-in-law Marvaleen Mullins, Doris Willis, Mary Stasek, Rosemarie (Tony) Ziegert, and Elaine Winter. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a brother, Jack, a sister-in-law Shirley Henry, and brothers-in-law Jim Mullins, Robert Schremp, Robert Willis, and Gil Stasek. Dick was an avid reader and also closely followed the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Antigo Red Robins sports teams in all seasons. He enjoyed hunting with his sons, grandsons and brother, as well as simply spending time with family and friends at Bass Lake and at the Villages, FL. Mr. Winter was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Bass Lake Golf Course, Langlade County Bar Association, and Wisconsin State Bar Association, by which he was recognized for 50 years of practice. He was also a former member of the Antigo Kiwanis Club. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church. Reverend David Karolus will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 PM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home and on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the service at the church. Military honors will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in Mr. Winter's name. Strasser-Roller Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
