Robert D. Sutherland

Robert D. Sutherland, age 84, of Bryant died Saturday at Bohlman Manor in Birnamwood. Mr. Sutherland was born on December 5, 1927 in Fond du Lac, WI to the late Alfred and Mary (Noyes) Sutherland. He attended Bragg Grade School then went on to graduate from Fond du Lac High School and Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Mr. Sutherland learned to play the trumpet as a sixth grader and went onto become a professional musician. He played both the trumpet and flugelhorn with Jazz being his forte. A member of many popular bands, he was a regular in the Myron Floren Orchestra playing for many well-known vocalists. On September 22, 1962, Mr. Sutherland was united in marriage to Marion Hackbarth at Peace Lutheran Church in Antigo. The couple enjoyed 50 years of marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland resided for many years in Chippewa Falls, where Mr. Sutherland was employed by Amoco Corporation. Upon retirement the couple moved to Mueller's Lake in Polar. Mr. Sutherland was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, Grace Waters of Sheboygan and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Sutherland was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Elmer, 2 sisters, Abby Hanson and Alice Riordan. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00- 7:00 PM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home and on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Military honors will be performed at the graveside.
