Ruth Naurene Handeyside, lifelong Elcho area resident, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Nu-Roc Nursing Home in Laona under the care of Ministry Hospice. She was 93 years old. She was born Sept. 6, 1919 at the Borth Family Farm Home in Kempster, daughter of the late Charles and Martha (Daga) Borth. She married Gordon Handeyside on Aug. 11, 1936 at Immanuel Lutheran in Waukegan, IL. He preceded her in death. She graduated from Elcho High School and attended Stevens Point College. Mrs. Handeyside was a homemaker and also worked as a librarian at the Elcho School. Along with her husband, she owned and operated the Elcho Standard Station. She enjoyed traveling, taking trips to Hawaii, Alaska, and all over the country. She also loved spending time at the cottage with her family. Keeping up with the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy. She was a member of the Elcho Sewing Club and the Langlade County Retired Educators. She was artistic, and enjoyed crafts and flower arranging. She will be remembered for her big smile and winning personality, and she brightened the days of her caregivers at Nu-Roc in her later years. She was a devoted member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Elcho. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy (Allen) Space of Crandon; son, Colin "Chuck" (Beverly) Handeyside of Elcho; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Handeyside of Elcho; 6 grandchildren, Earl Handeyside of Crandon, Edward (Jodi) Space of Elcho, Charles (Julie) Space of Plover, Andy (Alison) Space of Crandon, Melissa (Kurt) Fernandez of Duluth, MN, and Gina Olson of Merrill; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Handeyside; a sister, Kathleen Hart; and an infant grandson, James Handeyside. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Elcho, with Rev. Jerome Hahn officiating. Visitation will be 9:30-11:00 Saturday at the church. Interment will follow the service at Elcho Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to St. Luke Lutheran Church.
