Shirley Thompson, formerly of Mattoon, passed away on April 11, 2021 in Appleton under the care of her family and Theda Care Hospice at the age of 81. Shirley was born on March 27, 1940 to the late Jerome and Lena (Wolf) Thompson in Mattoon. Shirley graduated from Mattoon High School. In addition to raising her 3 children, Shirley worked as a manager at Piggly Wiggly in Little Chute and as a cashier at Lakeside Grocery Store. Shirley is survived by children; Charlene Bongers (Tom Schulz) of Black Creek, Bert Bongers, and Vickie Bodart. She is also survived by sisters; Ihone (Edwin) Johnson and Martha Hayek, grandchildren; Rebecca Davis, Dan (Kristi) Liebhauser, Ashley (Ryan) Page, Logan Reetz, Nicole Bodart, and Trevor Bodart, great-grandchildren; Zach, Kalob, Lily, and Ben. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a sister; June Menting and brothers; Harold, Jay, Jerome Jr, Chester, and Howard. A funeral service for Shirley will take place on April 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church in Mattoon. A visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow on a later date at Aniwa Union Cemetery.
