Toini Gertrude "Gertie" Hansen, age 94 of Birnamwood, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013. She was born November 4, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois, daughter of the late Carl and Hannah Karppinen. She married Ralph E. Hansen on April 26, 1941. He predeceased her on July 2, 2013. Mrs. Hansen attended grade school in Elmwood Park, IL and graduated from Austin High School in Chicago. She attended Moody Evening School in Chicago and completed the Scofield Correspondence Course (a three year course). Mrs. Hansen was a leader in Awana Clubs as well as at Camp Awana in Fredonia, WI. She also taught Sunday school and Ladies' Bible Classes. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Free Church in Woodruff, WI, and was active in the Gideon's Auxiliary International. She worked as the bookkeeper for her husband's engraving business. She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed sewing and crafts, cooking and canning. Mrs. Hansen also enjoyed many sports. She was a wonderful wife and mother and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by three daughters, Carol (Larry) Larson of Birnamwood, WI, Shirley DeBorde of Austin, TX, and Linda (John) McGhee of Sanford, FL; a son, Ronald Hansen of Birnamwood; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Hansen; one brother, and two sons-in-law, Tom Christensen and Bobby DeBorde. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Nazarene in Mattoon. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00-7:00 PM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the service at the church.
